Exchange and Transport Mechanisms Flashcards
B1.10- B1.11 (12 cards)
Surface area to volume ratio in exchange
SA must be large in comparison to volume for efficient exchange because it ensures quick exchange
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration e.g. in the lungs
What is facilitated diffusion?
A type of passive transport allows molecules to move across a cell membrane along their concentration gradient with the assistance of specializes proteins
What is osmosis?
The passage of water or other solvents through a semipermeable membrane e.g. diabetes
What is active transport?
When cells move molecules across their membrane from an area of low to high concentration using energy
What is co-transport?
The coupled movement of two substances across a membrane
What is the effect of diffusion on rate of exchange?
If the distance is smaller diffusion will happen faster as the particles don’t travel far
How will temperature on rate of exchange?
It will increase the rate as they will have more energy and move faster
What does metabolic rate mean?
The amount of energy your body uses to maintain normal necessary actions e.g. breathing, circulation
How does the metabolic rate effect the rate of exchange?
Higher the metabolic rate the more energy there is increasing the rate of diffusion
What is the fluid mosaic model?
A model that describes the arrangement and movement of the molecules that make up a cell membrane
What is passive transport?
The movement of substances across a cell without eh use of energy by the cell
