What were the three types of farming?
Livestock, arable (crop) and pasture (same as livestock but more profitable)
Where was arable farming more popular?
Popular in the South Midlands where the land was flatter
Where was livestock farming more popular?
Popular in the North where the area was hilly.
Who had control of the lands?
The landlords had control of all the land and divided it up into strips to sell to tenants
What happened as a result of land being divided into strips?
Less efficient crop grow
What happened to tenant farmers?
They could lose land if the landlords didn’t agree to the way they farmed or if they changed farming methods.
What could tenants do with their land?
They could enclose their land and only grow one crop on a large scale.
What did all villagers have the right to do?
They had the right to graze
What infuriated many villagers?
The enclosure of land
What law was passed in 1489?
The Anti-Enclosure law which prevented land being closed off. It wasn’t effective because they could get confused with engrossing
What was engrossing?
Multiple farms coming together
What was enclosure?
Fencing off of land from open fields with the ending of all common rights over it
Where were many villages established?
Near the forest.
