female repro I Flashcards

1
Q

reproductive system - survival? functional when?

A
  • not necessary for survival of the individual, but necessary for the species
  • other systems of body functional at/shortly after birth
  • repro becomes functional at puberty

Q

Follicle develooment - # enter development vs maturity?

A
  • multiple primordial follicles enter development at same time
  • only one follicle reaches maturity and is ovulated
  • remainder degenerate by process of atresia

Q

Endocrine Function of Follicle

A
  • theca and granulosa cells together secrete estrogen
  • estrogen enters capillary bed within theca and circulates throughout body
  • estrogen: supports regrwoth of endometrium after menstration

16
Q

Function of non-ovulated follicles

A
  • amount of estrogen secreted is a function of size of follicle
  • many small follicles are required in early stages of ovarian cycle to secrete required estrogen
  • as follicles enlarge, one becomes dominant and takes over estrogen secretion
17
Q

Ovulation: follicle? estrogen? etc finish pathway

A
  • as follicle matures and enlarges, it secretes increasing amounts of estrogen
  • high concentation of estrogen causes ant pit to secrete LH
  • LH induces final maturation and ovulation of follicle
18
Q

Ovulation - order of events

A
19
Q

Function of Corpus Luteum

A
  • temporary endocrine organ
  • secretes estrogen and progesterone
  • progesterone prepares endometrium for implantation of embryo
  • progesterone required for maintenance of endometrium
20
Q

Fate of Oocyte - during ovulation? capturated how?

A
  • during ovulation: infundibulum and fimbria sweep over surface of ovary
  • oocyte captured by infundibulum and transported into fallopian tube by ciliated epithelium
21
Q

Fate of Oocyte - transport down tube? fertilization? then?

A
  • oocyte transported down fallopian tubes by ciliated epithelium and contractions of smooth mucle in wall of fallopina tube
  • ferilization takes place in ampulla of F. tube
  • ferilized zygote travels down FT to uterus, implants in mucosa
22
Q

Chorionic Gonadotrophic Hormone

A
  • made by cells of implanted embroy (chorion)
23
Q

corpus luteum secretory during? then what takes over?

A
  • corpus luteum remains secretory throughout first trimester
  • placenta takes over secretion of progesterone and estrogen
