fight or flight response Flashcards
(11 cards)
what is it
an evolutionary survival mechanism in response to a threat. primes the body and mind for extreme action. body returns to homeostasis after its passed
how it happens stage 1
- stressor detected by hypothalamus
stage 2
- HPA axis in endocrine system activated
stage 3
- pituarity gland releases hormone ACTH detected by adrenal cortex releasing cortisol
stage 4
hypothalamus also activates the sympathetic branch of the ans
stage 5
and the adrenal medula is triggered via the Sympathetic Adrenomedullary Patheway releasing adrenaline
role of adrenaline (psych)
psych effects of adrenaline include increase alertness anxiety and attention
role of adrenaline (physical)
increase blood flow to brain and skeletal muscles (quick reaction)
decreased blood flow to skin and immune systems
dilated pupils (improved vision)
faster breathing rate (more oxygen)
not designed for modern world
it’s maladaptive in most situations as it’s trigged by stimuli that can’t run away or be fought (eg: exams)
what does it cause
acute stress
long term cause
chronic stress
stress related illness impacting immune and circ systems
