ways of studying brain Flashcards
(12 cards)
4 ways
FMRI
post mortem
EEG
ERP
fmri
detects blood flow as more active areas need more blood
positive of fmri
good spatial resolution 1mm so it’s precise
negative of fmri
poor temporal resolution - 1 image every few seconds
EEG
22-34 electrodes that attach to a cap fitted to scalp with conductive gel. read out sum of total activation of the brain cortex under the electrode. display series of lines displaying patterns called brain waves. amplitude (size) show intensity and frequency (distance between each) shows speed
eeg positive
temporal accuracy- milliseconds
cheaper than alt
eeg negative
poor spatial activity as it’s a sum of a large number of neurones in the cortex
can’t detect activity deep in brian
erp
uses same technique and equipment as eeg but presents a stimulus many times so it creates a smooth curve of activation. statistical averaging is the data name. waveform peaks and dips to show exactly when cognitive processes happen
positive
erp allow research to isolate and study how cog processes take place in brain
good temporal resolution
negative
poor spatial resolution
post moretem
unusual brains dissected after death and compared with neurotypical brains.
positive
high spatial resolution- microscopic down to the neuronal level
negative
figure out after death for that person- Tan damage to frontal lobe
not seen as ethical
