localisation of function Flashcards
(12 cards)
what is it
functions like movement speech and language performed in distinct brain regions
opposite view is brain act’s holistically
contralateral
each hemisphere of the brain (right and left) control the opposite side of the body including both motor and sensory pathways
hemispheric lateralisation
each hemisphere is specialised to perform different functions eg: language centres in left hemisphere and visospatial in right
motor cortex
voluntary muscle motor movements across the body
at the back of the frontal lobe
damage: loss of muscle function or if severe paralysis on opposite body sidd
somatosensory cortex
receiving sense impressions from around the body
front of the partial lobe
damage: loss of sensation in opposite side
broca’s area
located in left frontal lobe only
responsible for speech production
damage: motor aphasia or difficult producing fluent speech
wernickes area
located in left frontal lobe only
speech comprehension
damage: sensory aphesia/ difficult understanding speech
auditory cortex
receives and processes sound info from ears
located in both hemispheres
visual cortex
occipital lobe
visual processing each hemisphere
receives info from opposite visual field
positives
clive wearing (amnesia) language and memory recollection are localised and in dif areas
modern brain scan like fmri support older research on language centres- activation in regions when they perform tasks
negative
case studies aren’t scientific
some functions like consciousness appear to not be localised at all so the theory is dependent on the function
