the divisions of the nervous system Flashcards
(8 cards)
what is the human nervous system
body wide system of nerve cells that collect information from the world, process it and take action by directing body organs and muscles via transmission of electro chemical messages
CNS
central nervous system
involves complex processing including the brain from conscious and unconscious processing and the spinal cord which receives and transmits information and reflex processing
PNS
peripheral nervous system
body wide net repel of message neurons
sensory (afferent) neurons take info to the cns and motor (efferent) neurons take info away from the cns
ANS
automatic nervous system
part of the pns that controls actions and internal glands
involuntary
somatic nervous system
part of pns that contorts skeletal muscles
voluntary
sympathetic system
part of the ans
increases bodily activities
release of noradrenaline activates in fight/flight response
increase heart/sweat/breathing rate/dilate pupils
parasympathetic system
part of ans
decrease bodily activities releases acetylcholine
activities in rest
decreased heart/sweat/breathing/constricts pupils
homeostasis
maintained
this means our internal environment is regulated which is a balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
