Five Factor Theory of Personality Flashcards
(27 cards)
Persona which refers to theatrical masks worn in dramas, the dynamic organization within the individual of those psychophysical systems that determine his [or her] characteristic behavior and thought
Personality
is Personality dynamic?
Yes, it is not necessarily changing but it is not static, because the way we can express it changes
because personality recognizes the working relationship between the mind and the body
Personality as Psychophysical

officially began as a subfield of psychology in the 1930s with the publication Personality: A psychological interpretation
The field of Personality psychology
is originally conceptualized as the study of the individual person
Personality Psychology
Common themes of Personality Theories
Indivual Differences - how are persons different from each other? what is the structure of the human individuality? Concepts include temperaments, traints, and dispositions (traits)
Motivation - why do persons do what they do? What do persons want? What energizes and direct the person’s behaviors? What are the dynamics of human actions? (characteristic adaptations - more particular features of psychological individuality that
Holism - (Life stories - internalized and evolving narratives of the self)
more particular features of psychological individuality that describe personal adaptations to motivational, social cognitive tasks
Characteristic Adaptations
internalized and evolving narratives of the self)
Life stories
Gordon Willard Allport
are the explanation for motivation and individual differences.
traits
are neuropsychic structures having the capacity to render many stimuli functionally equivalent, and initiate and guide meaningfully consistent patterns of expressive and adaptive behvaior
traits
are causal entities - reason for individual differences between and among individuals, consistency of behavior across time, and stability of behaviour across situations
traits
are not hypothetical structures, but biophysical structures located in the brain (traits could be heritable)
traits
are motivational - the reasons for an individual’s behavior
Traits
Traits are malleable and environmentally-sensitive
true
Basic Assumptions of FFT
- Individuals can be characterized in terms of relatively enduring patterns of thoughts, feelings, and actions.
- Traits can be quantitatively assessed
FFT at a Glank e
- Allport and Odbert in 1930, lexical approach (dictionary) 17,953 (personality embedded in language) - Stable Traits, Temporary Traits, Social Evaluations, Metaphorical
- Cattell in 1943 used 4500 stable traits; no factor analysis yet so he ended up with 35 clusters of personality traits.
- Fiske in 1949 took a subset of 22 of Cattell’s 35; credited as the first to discover of FFM but was not able to identify its precise structure (particularly due to small sample size)
- Tupes and Christal in 1961 Original 5 factor model (Surgency, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional stability, and Culture)
- Costa and McCray in 1980’s developed a test NEO PI, Factor Analysis to reduce the number of variables
Five-Factor Theory (FFT)
* Assumptions about human nature:
- Knowability - personality is a proper object of scientific study
- Rationality - people are generally capable of understanding themselves and others (bounded rationality)
- Variability - people differ from each other in psychologically different ways.
- Proactivity - the locus of causation of human actions is to be sought in the person
taps into the way people cope with everyday stresses.
Neuroticism, tied with Emotional Stability
High N scorers have tendencies to experience variable moods over time, fatigue over the course of the day, dissociation (ie. inability to recall important life events and feeling disconnected from life and other people), and physical symptoms (direct correlation with emotional stability)
TRUE
can be characterized by social attention
Extraversion
can be characterized by the need for novelty
Openness, High O scorers are usually imaginative, curious, creative, and thrill-seekers. High O scorers also tend to be more spiritual and to be more open to receiving information coming at them from a variety of sources. High O scorers also have tendencies to be open to try out different sexual positions or to having alternative sex partners.
a lover of harmonious social interaction and cooperative family life.
