Free radicals Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is another name for an unstable radical?
Free radical
What is an unstable radical?
An atom or molecule with one or more unpaired electron. They are oxidising agents
Why are unstable radicals a problem?
They pull a hydrogen atom from another molecule to pair up with, consequently damaging the molecules in the cell, such as lipids etc.
How do vitamins c and e, as well as beta-ceratone help protect us from free radicals?
They provide hydrogen atoms whose electrons pair up with the unpaired elect ones in the radicals
How do anti oxidants protect us from free radicals?
They use enzymes to repair oxidised DNA and use progresses to destroy oxidised proteins
Examples of foods with antioxidant properties
Wine and some fruit juices
