What are cohort studies?
A group of people who are studied over a period of time
What are scientists who study diseases called?
Epidemiologists
What are case control studies?
Compares two groups of people: one with the disease who receive treatments, and one group who have the disease but carry on as normal
What type of study was children of the 90’s?
Cohort, and longitudinal
What were the problems with children of the 90’s?
It was very expensive and it took a long time
What did children of the 90’s find?
- it was okay for children to sleep on their backs
* found genes for obesity and high blood pressure
Details of children of the 90’s
20,000 children took part and all sorts of things were measured. For example, they took surveys, DNA, and placenta
What makes a good study?
- clear aim
- no selection bias
- minimum drop outs
- large sample size
- control variables
- valid methods
What is a case series method and what are the flaws?
It only uses cases, no controls, so the results are very unreliable
