Q

Gambling in sports

A

Gambling in itself is not an example of deviant behaviour because it is legal to bet on sports events.
Gambling or wagering has been a feature of sports activities for centuries of competition. With examples being seen in the 19th century times (pedestrianism)
Sport lends itself to gambling because the outcomes of events are supposed to be unpredictable and most hold element of chance.
Gambling is now globalised due to the role of the internet and the huge range of betting options available.
Some sports ban all performers in that sport from gambling on their own sport

Q

Why we have been unable to eliminate illegal betting

A

Rise in gambling on sport – If people can reduce the element of chance then huge amounts of money to be made
Increase in gambling popularity - adverts, online
Punishments not severe enough to deter some players
Huge amounts of money to be made
Short careers no guarantee of long term security
Player education in some parts of the world isn’t good enough
Belief that others are doing it and hard to get caught
Embedded in the culture of the sport (E.g Cricket with respected
players involved)
Hard to detect – no test (like drugs) a player can take to highlight
match fixing

Sponsorship - Gambling companies provide sponsorship which may
cause negative role modelling / encourage betting
Advertising / globalisation – such a large volume of adverts and access to betting online – making it easier to get involved.
