What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)?
anxiety and worry about most things for >6 months
What are common symptoms seen with GAD?
fatigue, concentration difficulties, sleep problems, muscle tension and restlessness
How do you treat GAD?
SSRI: Fluoxetine, Paroxetine, Sertraline, Citalopram
Venlafaxine and Buspirone
Psychotherapy and Behavioral Therapy
What are common Benzodiazepine drugs?
Diazepam, Lorazepam, Clonazepam, Alprazolam, Oxazepam, Chlordiazepoxide, Temazepam, Flurazepam
What are common side effects of Benzodiazepine drugs?
Sedation, confusion, memory deficits, respiratory depression, increased addiction potential
What are common side effects of Buspirone?
Headache, Nausea, Dizziness
What are special indications to use Lorazepam in anxiety?
Emergency situations because it can be given IM
What are special indications to use Clonazepam in anxiety?
If addiction is a concern due to longer half-life
What are special indications to use Chlordiazepoxide, oxazepam or lorazepam in anxiety?
Treatment of alcohol withdrawal: lorazepam and oxazepam are the drugs of choice for patients with liver issues
What are special indications to use Alprazolam in anxiety?
Frequently used in panic attack and panic disorder
What are special indications to use Flurazepam, Temazepam and Triazolam in anxiety?
Approved as Hypnotics

Flumazenil

Benzodiazepine Antagonist
What can Flumazenil use cause in a patient with chronic dependence?
Withdrawal: seizures or delirium tremens
