What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?
Patients experience obsessions alone or in combination with Compulsions that affect the level of functioning
What are obsessions?
Thoughts: intrusive, senseless and distressing to the patient: increasing anxiety
What are Compulsions?
Counting and checking: performed to neutralize obsessive thoughts: time consuming but tend to lower anxiety
Is OCD Ego-dystonic or Ego-Syntonic?
Ego-dystonic: conflicts with goals of the ego
What are features of OCD?
Increased frontal lobe metabolism and increased caudate nucleus size
What is the treatment for OCD?
SSRI are first line: Fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, citalopram
Primary behavioral therapy: Exposure and response therapy
What is Hoarding Disorder?
Problems discarding possessions leading to persistent accumulation that overwhelm their home with clutter: impairs level of functioning and impairs ability to maintain a safe environment
How do you treat Hoarding Disorder?
SSRI + Behavioral modification or Psychotherapy
How do you treat Body Dysmorphic Disorder?
SSRI + individual Psychotherapy
