Rubbish
rubbish is not collected and so builds up - eyesore,smell and attracts rodents.
Sanitation
no pipes or sewage works so sewage is emptied into streets increasing disease.
Landslides
very steep topography make transportation very difficult. due to the topography rockslip, rockfall and flooding kill many each year.
water and electricity
water was not supplied to favelas so people have to collect water by hand.
sources often contaminated with raw sewage, domestic and/or industrial waste and agro-chemicals from farms.
People often steal electricity from the national grid by adding wires to power poles- called gatos.
lack of services
Favelas are deprived of public services such as schools becuase of their illegal status, problem of refuse collection in narrow streets, leading to high concentrations of refuse which begins to pose serious health problems.
crime drugs and gangs
crime, especially violent crime is an ever present issue with rocinha being run by drug cartels.
Rio is the main transit point for the columbian cocaine trade into europe and a majour market.
