Don’t give with paralytic tissue
Psyllium
Makes you poop
Dietary fiber to cause fecal matter to expand and increase bowel movements. Mix with 8 oz water
Docusate Sodium
Makes you poop
Stool softener
Takes days to work
Don’t chew or spit pills
Magnesium hydroxide salts
Makes you poop
stool softener salts that cause loose stools to expand in intestine
Antacids
Calcium Carbonate
Give 1 hour after meals with full glass of water
Can cause hypercalcemia
Don’t give with antibiotics
Histamine 2 Blocker - H2 Blocker
Famotidine/Cimetidine
Used to prevent ulcers and reduces stomach acid. Give with or before meals
Proton Pump Inhibitor
Omeprazole, pantoprazole
Take 60 minutes before meal
Don’t chew
May cause liver failure
Simethicone
Simethicone - chew tablets after meals
Sucralfate
Protects living of the stomach
Give PO on empty stomach
Do not crush or chew
May cause hyperglycemia
Do not give with warfarin or phenytoin
