Maternity Medications that STOP contractions
Terbutaline Sulfate and Ritodrine
Causes tachycardia in mother and baby, decreases potassium

Oxytocin
Assess character, frequency and duration of contractions
STOP when 2 minutes apart and lasts more than 60 seconds
Monitor fetal heart rate every 15 minutes
Releases milk in pregnant women
IV piggybacked into main line
Antidiuretic effect can cause water intoxication

Magnesium Sulfate
Decreases respirations, reflexes and urine output.
Indwelling catheter needed to monitor urine output
Monitor reflexes and respirations

Calcium Gluconate

Methergine
Give IM can cause hypertensive crisis
Do not give before placenta delivers.
Methergine Side Effects
Dizzy, headache, tinnitus, cardiac palpitations
Avoid smoking due to vasoconstriction
No grapefruit
No breastfeeding for 12 hours after taking
Increases fetal lung maturity
Betamethasone - IM
Administered antenatally (34 to 36 weeks gestation if birth is imminent)
2 12mg doses 24 hours a part
S/E of Betamethasone
Hypertension
pruritus
hyperglycemia
