What is a performance goal?
Focuses on your own personal performance
What are the pros of performance goals?
Focus on improving personal performance
They are motivating as they don’t rely on others
What is an outcome goal?
Focuses on the end result such as winning
What are the cons of outcome goals?
Some performers become too focused and individual performance drops
Individuals don’t have control over end result
What is used to help goals be set for perfomers?
SMART Target
What does the ‘S’ stand for in SMART and how can it be used for goal setting?
Specific: Goal must be clear and focused on what is wanted to be improved – To improve successful passes
What does the ‘M’ stand for in SMART and how can it be used for goal setting?
Measurable: Something that is measured like time or distance – I want to run 100m in 12 seconds
What does the ‘A’ stand for in SMART and how can it be used for goal setting?
Achievable: Goal must be achievable to you – I achieve 85% pass completion, need to improve by 5%
What does the ‘R’ stand for in SMART and how can it be used for goal setting?
Realistic: Goal must be realistic and be possible – Decreasing time by 1/2 a second is doable due to drills
What does the ‘T’ stand for in SMART and how can it be used for goal setting?
Time-Bound: Goals must have a time frame – Be done in 10 weeks
