Group Dynamics Flashcards
(14 cards)
What defines a group?
2+ people who interact with a mutual influence
Sense of identity, roles and norms
Structured communication
Common objectives and goals
What is the relationship between groups and teams?
All teams are groups, but not all groups are teams
What are the three theories of group development?
The linear perspective
The cyclical perspective
The pendular perspective
Name the four “ormings” of the Linear Perspective and describe them
Forming - form relationships and develop structure
Storming - resist leadership and control
Norming - develop unity and cooperation
Performing - members work together to achieve goals
What is the cyclical perspective?
Similar to the life cycle, the emphasis is on the terminal phase of the group’s existence. As the group develops, it prepares for its own breakup
Where is the cyclical perspective seen mostly?
In groups or teams that last only 10-15 weeks
What are the stages of group development in the pendular perspective?
Orientation Differentiation and conflict Resolution and cohesion Differentiation and conflict Termination
Describe the Kohler Effect?
The phenomenon where less capable individuals perform better when performing a task with others compared to alone
What is the equation for actual productivity in Steiner’s Model?
Actual productivity = potential productivity - losses due to poor group processes
What is the role of the coach in Steiner’s Model?
To increase relevant resources for the group
Reduce process losses through enhancing cohesion
Describe the relationship between individual skill and group performance
The greater need for interaction in a task, the more importance of group productivity is needed compared to individual ability
Inverse relationship
What is the Ringelmann effect? Name an example of it
When performances decrease as the number of people in the group increases
The rope pulling example
What is social loafing?
When individuals within a group put forth less than 100% effort due to motivation losses
What is the cohesion-performance relationship?
It is a circular relationship, increased cohesion leads to greater performance and brings teams together for more cohesion
