What is guidance?
Any information we give to learners to help them develop their skills
What are the types of guidance?
Verbal, visual, manual, mechanical
What are some advantages of visual guidance?
Learner can see accurate performance
Helps to form a mental image of the correct performance
With video it can bee slowed down
What is a disadvantage of visual guidance?
Problems if there is no accurate image available
What are some advantages of verbal guidance?
It is immediate
Effective questioning to enhance learning
Effective combined with visual guidance
What are some disadvantages of verbal guidance?
Some verbal instructions are too long and complicated
Some movements cannot be accurately explained
What are advantages of manual and mechanical guidance?
They can prevent leaners making inaccurate movements
In dangerous situations it can help performer to deal with fear
Helps to develop kinaesthetic awareness
What are disadvantages of manual and mechanical guidance?
Should not be overused as performer can become dependant on support
Can give learners unrealistic feeling of the motion
When is visual guidance used?
Effective in the cognitive stage of learning but is useful in all stages of learning, using a video for associative and autonomous
When is verbal guidance used?
Explanation should be brief and to the point especially for cognitive leaners. It’s more useful in later stages when more attention capacity is greater
When is manual and mechanical guidances used?
Useful in cognitive stage helping to get the feel of a skill. It can also be used by autonomous stage as they might need it if a diver is trainer out of water
