difference between hirsituism and virilization

A

hirsutism is excess male pattern hair growth while virilization is hirsutism + secondary male sex characteristics (clitoromegaly, deep voice, etc)

next step/labs to deetermine etiology of hirsutism

A

get free T, DHEAS, 17-OHP, cortisol

  • elevated T = either adrenal or ovarian source
  • elevated DHEAS = adrenal source
  • elevated 17-OHP = CAH
  • elevated cortisol = cushing syndrome
