What is it ?
Aims to predict likelihood that people engage in (preventative) health behaviours
Perceived Susceptibility
A person actively researches their family health history or seeks medical advice to assess their risk
Perceived Severity
Someone verbalises or shows concern about the serious consequences of an illness (e.g., “I’m worried that if I don’t manage my blood pressure, I could have a heart attack”).
Perceived Benefits
Taking preventive actions because they believe in the positive outcomes (e.g., using sunscreen to avoid skin cancer or wearing masks to prevent illness)
Perceived Barriers
Verbalizing doubts or excuses (e.g., “I want to exercise, but I don’t have time” or “I can’t afford healthy food”).
Cues to Action
Starting exercise after a friend shares a personal health scare story.
