Heart Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are the four chambers of the heart
- left and right atria
- left and right ventricles
What separates the left and the right side of the heart
A muscular wall called the septum
The sac that encloses the heart
Pericardium, fluid inside is called the pericardium fluid
Arteries
All arteries carry blood away from the heart which is oxygenated, except for the pulmonary artery, this carries deoxygenated blood away from the heart into the lungs
Veins
Carry blood towards the heart which is deoxygenated except for the pulmonary vein, this carries oxygenated blood towards the heart
Flow of blood through the heart
Superior and inferior vena cava, right atrium, left ventricle, pulmonary artery- leaves heart, comes back in, pulmonary vein, left atrium, left ventricle, aorta
Pulmonary circulation
The movement of blood into and out of the lungs to pick up oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide
Systemic circulation
The movement of blood from the left side of the heart to all parts of your body where oxygen is used by the cells and carbon dioxide is picked up from cellular respiration
Coronary pathway
Transports blood to and from the heart muscle (coronary arteries and veins)
Pathway of circulation
Right atrium to right ventricle to pulmonary capillaries to left atrium to left ventricle to systemic capillaries
Valves
Valves open and close to let the blood flow through the heart, they prevent backflow
Atrioventricular valve
Between the atria and ventricles, opens when atria contract, close when ventricles contract
Semilunar valve
Between ventricles and arteries, open when ventricles contract, close when atria contract
Heart beat
- a lub dub sound due to the closing of heart valves
Lub- atria contract and blood is forced into the ventricles and AV valves
Dub- ventricles contract and blood is forced out of the heart and the semi-lunar valve closes
Gurgle
Heart murmur (valves do not close properly)
Diastole
Ventricular relaxation (atria contract) (lub)
Systole
Ventricular contraction (dub)
