Define militarism and example
A strong military force. Germany was trying to catch up to Britain and Russia’s army.
What were the two alliances and who was in them?
Triple alliance- Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Turkey
Triple entante- France, Russia and Britain
What is imperialism and give an example
When one country takes unoccupied land. The major countries wanted more land but there was none left.
Britain took over Africa.
Define nationalism and give an example.
When a country has pride in themselves.
The Black Hand was proud of their Serbian roots.

What was Britain like before the war?
They had a strong military force and grew power though worldwide empire.
What was Germany like before the war?
Their leader had died and the new one didn’t like Britain.
They were envious of their army.
What was France like before the war?
They had lost a battle to Germany over Alsace and Lorraine. They were bitter toward Germans
What was Russia before the war?
They were determined to improve their status among the European powers and wanted to prove this with their military might. They wanted to play the role of protector to Serbia.
What was Austria-Hungary like before the war?
They had many nationalities living in the nation. Civil war was always close.
What were the problems between the french and English Canadians?
Britain wanted Canada to go to war but the French Canadians didn’t want to be loyal to Britain because they were their own country. They fought in 2 battles with Britain but the french didn’t want to.
What was the Spark?
The Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot because he was heir to the throne and Serbia didn’t want to be part of Austria-Hungary. The Black Hand was the group that killed him.

How long was the battle?
Canada got a reputation of having tough and dependable troops. By fighting hard against the Germans and buying time for the British soldiers. The Canadians were gassed.

What is the significance of the battle of the Somme?
The battle taught them to use new tactics for defence systems.
How did Canadians contribute to Vimy Ridge?
Canadians were the only ones who could defeat the Germans at Vimy ridge.
