If HIV is untreated, how many years is the patient expected to live?

Infection to death = 12 years

Malnutrition, malaria or TB on top of HIV = 5 years

Injected directly into blood stream (transfusion, IV drugs)

Crosses mucous membrane (unprotected sex, damage to membranes)

Tests for antibodies to HIV

Rapid test - ELISA
RNA Assay

Western blot - detects HIV protein

Prophylaxis to prevent OI
