democracy meaning
people having the right to speak up
election meaning
processes whereby the people are able to choose their representatives and members of parliament
representative democracy meaning
a political system based on citizens’ voting to elect representatives
liberal democracy meaning
a form of government in which sovereignty is vested in the citizens
political party meaning
groups of politicians who have similar ideas about how to best govern the country.
constitutional monarchy meaning
the reigning monarch (king or queen) is still our head of state even though they have limited power
parliament meaning
an organisation that makes the laws in a country, often with a lower house to draft laws and an upper house to review the proposed law.
3 levels of government?
federal, state & local
federal government…
raises money through taxing income, spending money and businesses
local government…
collect taxes from all local property owners and receives money from the federal and state governments
state government…
receives more than half their money from the federal government and collects tax
federal matters eg
Medicare, defence, immigration, foreign policy
state matters eg
roads, housing, public transport, police, ambulance services, prisons
local matters eg
town planning, sewerage, local roads, rubbish collection
