Science (Nervous system) Flashcards
(9 cards)
Central nervous system
Brain and spinal cord
-Interpret inputs and coordinate responses
Peripheral system
Peripheral nerves (Sensory and motor)
- Relay messages between the body and the brain
Autonomic nervous system
Involuntary control (e.g., heartbeat, breathing..)
Somatic nervous system
Voluntary control of muscles.
Sympathetic nervous system
responsible for ‘Fight or flight’ response (increases heartrate/ alertness).
Parasympathetic nervous system
responsible for ‘Rest and digest’ response (slows heartrate/calms body).
Parts of neuron
Dendrites, Axon, Synapse, Myelin Sheath, Axon terminal, Cell body
(DASMAC)
Distinguish between motor/sensory neurons
Sensory: Send info from receptors to CNS.
Motor: Send commands from CNS to effectors (away from CNS).
Reflex VS Conscious
Reflex: Automatic, fast via reflex arc.
Conscious: Thought involved, slower.
