What is an Inclusive Environment?
Space designed and managed to allow people with a diverse range of needs and abilities to access it.
What is Inclusive Design?
Designing a space that everyone can use with no barriers that prevent use of the space:
- Lifts
- Ramps
- Wider openings / doors
- Hearing loops

What is the Equality Act 2010?
Provides legal protection against discrimination and inequality.
What are some of the Requirements of the Equality Act?
Requires “reasonable adjustments” to be made for people with protected characteristics
Provides access statement and audit for premises
Obligations fall to all controllers of let premises
What is the Test for Reasonableness?
Effectiveness of adjustment
Practicality of adjustment

How is the Equality Act 2010 Enforced?
By the law but often will have to be addressed by individuals protected under the act.

Approved Document setting out Building Regulations for accessibility.
Does following Part M of the Building Regulations ensure Inclusive Design?
Not necessarily, there could still be a case made under the Equality Act.
What are the different Types of Discrimination identified under the Equality Act?
Direct – treated differently than others as a result of protected characteristics
Indirect – company policy disadvantages a certain group of people
Harassment – any unwelcome behaviour
Victimisation – singling out an individual
