Infection Flashcards
(8 cards)

Q
SSI?
A
surgical site infection
within month of sx or within 1 yr of implant
1
Q
infection sppread mechanism?
A
hematogenous
direct innoculation
contiguous spread via skkin/tissue
2
Q
cardinal features of infection?
A
swelling, temperature, pain, erythema
3
Q
osteomyelitis labs
A
ESR and WBC can be normal
but ESR over 70 suggests bone infection
4
Q
osteomyelitis spread?
A
hematogenous in pediatric (sinusoids)
post-trauma in adults
5
Q
common organisms in osteomyelitis
A
80% staph
30-50% MRSA
6
Q
Native vs prosthetic joint infection - clinical presentation, labs, spread, organism
A
- Native joint is more painful (micromotion); cartilage damage from inflamm, biofilm prosthesis
- WBC high for synovial fluid (lower threshold for prosthetic 6000)
- Native is hematogenous, prosthetic is usu direct innoculation
- staph for both
7
Q
Signs of diabetic infection, imaging?
A
neuropathy, poor vasculaization, poor nutritional status
imaging to see bone affected
