Intro Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is anesthesia?
Entire loss, partial loss or absence of feeling or sensation with local or general insensibility implied specially to a patient having surgery.
Components of anesthesia definition
Reversible loss of consciousness
Analgesia
Areflexia
Muscle relaxation
Definition of analgesia
Block of conscious sensation of pain
Sedation definition
Sleep with preservation of eyelash reflex and purposeful response to command
Hypnosis
Unconsciousness without analgesia
Amnesia
Prevention of memory formation
Relaxation
Prevention of unwanted movement or muscle tone
What is MAC ? ( monitored anaesthesia care)
What are his components ?
Anaesthesia service for diagnostic or therapeutic procedures with local anaesthesia+sedation+analgesia where there’s preservation of spontaneous breathing and airway reflexes
Safe conscious sedation+ anxiolytics+ pain control
Definition general anaesthesia
Drug induced loss of consciousness where patient are not arousable even with painful sensation
What is regional anaesthesia
Loss of pain sensation with varying degrees of muscle relaxation in certain regions of the body
What is Epidural anaesthesia
Regional block resulting from injection of large volume of local anaesthetic into epidural space
What is safe anaesthesia
- trained anaesthetist and complete team
- paying attention to details
- Preoperative assessment
- medical records , lab investigations
- right meds and doses
- monitoring
-Resuscitation and advanced airway management equipment - safety checklists
Depth of anaesthesia
Stage 1 - analgesia (conscious , low pain)
Stage 2 - delirium (unconscious, reflexes preserved)
Stage 3- surgical anaesthesia ( increasing muscle relaxation , no airway protection )
Stage 4- medullary depression ( CVD and respiratory depression )
What is rapid sequence induction
Predetermined dose of IV induction followed immediately by short acting muscle relaxant
Which patient under GA should receive muscle relaxation
Full stomach
Pregnancy (12-20weeks)
Bowel obstruction or intra abdominal pressure
Morbid obesity
Gastric outlet obstruction
Gastroparesis (DM, ozempic)
Hiatal hernia, GERD
What is TIVA. ( total intravenous anaesthesia )
All the anesthetic are given through IV
Generally anesthestic (propofol) + analgesic (opioid)
Indications for TIVA
-High risk malignant hyperthemia
When neuromonitoring required
- hemodynamic instability
==-
Role of anaesthetist
Provide analgesia, anaesthesia, life sustaining care
Provide pain relief
Preoperative assessment , optimization of patient
Resuscitate patient
Transport of acutely ill patients
Pain medicine
intensive care medicine
Education, leadership
