Blazejewski SW. Thermoplastic Inclined Plane Aligner for Correction of Bilateral Mandibular Canine Tooth Distoclusion in a Cat. Journal of Veterinary Dentistry. 2013;30(4):236-247.

A
  • Case report in a cat with MAL2 Initially extracted deciduous canines, then applied tooth extensions to permanent teeth, which failed
  • Then took impressions and had thermoplastic incline planes (5 with serial gradations) fabricated which was a passive or intermittent force, removeable appliance. New appliance about every 10 days.
  • To tip the canine teeth, a maximum 20° angle between the tooth axis and IP surface was desirable; minimizing the intrusive forces.
  • Retainer recommended for recommended for 2 to 6-weeks for simple movements and 4 to 12-weeks for complex movements or about one half the time it takes to complete the movement.
  • Complication encountered was bowing of mandibular incisors, which self corrected over time

Volker MK, Luskin IR. Management of Mesioverted Maxillary Canine Teeth and Linguoverted Mandibular Canine Teeth. Journal of Veterinary Dentistry. 2016;33(3):170-184.

A
  • Case report describing simultaneous tipping of mesioverted maxillary canine teeth and linguoverted mandibular canine teeth
  • Used bilateral elastomeric chains and a small incline plane fashioned to attach only to the maxillary canine teeth, which would allow them to tip.
  • Used composite buttons formed directly on the teeth, chain set at 75% of the neutral length, lost chain and buttons on one side
  • For anchorage they applied the elastic chain with no tension between 09 and 08 – in future recommended to re-inforce with wire
  • No retainer phase was used as the interlock of the canines was expected to be self retaining

Verhaert L. A removable orthodontic device for the treatment of lingually displaced mandibular canine teeth in young dogs. Journal of veterinary dentistry. 1999;16(2):69-75.

A
  • This is the Kong Ball paper – 38 test subjects
  • Technique does not work with any major jaw length discrepancy ,and works best in young dogs with actively erupting teeth
  • In less severe cases of mandibular retrognathia, it works if a very large ball is used and it can help tip the teeth rostrally and labially (if mandible is too short)
  • They recommended 15 minutes of active chewing TID, movement typically taking 2-8 weeks time (older dogs up to 12)
  • Approx ¾ dogs experienced correction, main factors preventing correction were skeletal malocclusions, such as narrow mandible or mandibular retrognathia

Surgeon TW. Surgical exposure and orthodontic extrusion of an impacted canine tooth in a cat: A case report. Journal of Veterinary Dentistry. 2000;17(2):81-85.

A
  • Case report of a 7 month old cat with facial swelling, unerupted maxillary canine tooth and a dentigerous cyst
  • Opened and curetted the cyst, and left it to heal for 1 month to allow the tooth to erupt.
  • It didn’t so orthodontically extruded the canine tooth with a custom invented anchorage device with extrusion force of 50-75g
  • Managed to get the tooth extruded and it was still present and somewhat healthy at 5 years later.
  • Had abnormal radicular anatomy
