KEY WORDS- ADHERENCE AND NON-ADHERENCE Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is adherence?
- The degree to which a patients behaviour corresponds with the reccomendations of a healthcare professional.
What is non-adherence?
- The degree to which a patients behaviour does NOT correspond with the reccomendations of a healthcare professional.
- Due to patients beliefs and preferences.
Why would a patient not follow the reccomendations of a healthcare professional?
- Beliefs
- Preferences
What are the 2 main types of NON-ADHERNECE?
1)Failure to follow treatments (not taking medications or following advice as perscribed)
2)Failure to attend appointments (missing scheduled appointments)
Both cause side effects and due to different reasons.
Failure to follow treatments can be broken down into 3 different types. What are they?
- Primary non-adherence
- Non-persistence
- Non-conforming
PCP=Failure to follow treatments.
What is primary non-adherence?
When a doctor writes a prescription, but the medication is never collected and the patient never gets the medication or an alternative within an acceptable time period.
Failure to follow treatment (1)
What is non-persistence?
When a patient begins taking medication but stops without medical advice. This is often unintentional and can result from misunderstandings with the doctor or difficulties like cost, access, or forgetting
What barries may occur when a patient is attempting to follow treatments?
- Cost
- Access
What is non-conforming?
- When the medication is not taken as prescribed.
- Including missing doses, incorrect times or incorrect doses.
What did Taylor (1990) suggest?
- 93% of patients fail to adhere to SOME aspect of their TREATMENT.
- 93% of patients fail to adhere to SOME aspect of their TREATMENT.
Taylor (1990)
Explain some problems that can be caused by failure to attend appointments?
- Time lost: Leads to wasted time and resouces/delays in care for other patients/ financial losses..
- Impact on research: Researchers cannot move foward in their research if treatment courses are incomplete.
What are some problems caused by failing to follow treatment?
- Illness progression
- Reduced functional abilities
- Increased use of medical resources
- Reduced quality of life
Explain some problems caused by failing to follow treatment?
- Illness progression: Progression may require more invasive, stronger treatments.
- Reduced functional abilities: Progression can affect patients functional abilities.
- Increased use of medical resources: Progression may require hospitlisation, invasive, stronger treatments.
- Reduced quality of life: Progression leads to worsening systems
What is rational adherence?
Refers to situations in which a patient consciously and rationally decides not to adhere to medical advice based on a reasoned assessment of the costs/benefits of taking mediction/ treatment.
