Laba et al (2012)- investigate factors contributing factors to non-adhernce Flashcards
(13 cards)
When was Laba et al’s study conducted?
- 2012
What is the main aim of the Laba et al study?
To investigate and identify which factors contribute the most to rational non-adherence.
What is rational non-adhernce?
Refers to situations in which a patient consciously and rationally decides not to adhere to medical advice based on a reasoned assessment of the costs/benefits of taking mediction/ treatment.
What is another aim of the study?
To invetigate what factors contribute to patient adherence (such as patient background, characteristics or medication type)
What type of research method did the study use?
- Online survey (self-report)
How much ppts were in the sample?
- 161 Australians.
How were the ppts recruited?
- Via an online sampling system.
What type of sampling method was used?
- Online sampling method system- random sampling thus resulting in a representative sample (age, gender, eduction level)
Describe the procedure of Laba et al (2012) study?
-
An online survey that had 3 sections was used.
Section 1- Questions about medication
Section 2- Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE)
Section 3- Backround info
What was included in section 1 of the online questionnaire? (procedure)
- Questions about medication use, and attitudes towards medication.
What was included in section 3 of the online survery?
- Background information.
Name 8 of the factors explored in the online survery- section 2 (Discrete Choice Experiment)?
Medication-related factors:
1. Symptom severity
2. symptom frequency whilst on the medication
3. chance of early death from illness whilst on the medication
4. Severity of medication side effects
5. Chance of future unwanted medication side effects
6. How the medication is taken
Social-enviromental factors
7. Alcohol restriction
8. Monthly cost of the medication
SICK FACTS
Discrete Choice Experiment (Section 3)
- 10 hypothetical scenarios: ppts were presented with 10 hypothetical scenarios where they had to choose between 2 different medication options for different long-term illnesses.
- Choice: For each hypothetical, patients had to select between the 2 med options based on which one they would prefer to take, based on 8 different factors.
- Total questions: There were 32 different scenarios in total, but each participant only saw one version of the survey, which contained some of those scenarios.
- Repeated Choices: Some scenarios were repeated in the survey to check if participants were being consistent with their choices.
