Riekert and Drotar (1999) effects of non-participation in studies of treatment adhernce Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the aim of the study?
To investigate whether non-participation in a study about treatment adherence could predict non-adherence in adolescents with a chronic condition (type 1 diabetes)
What was the hypothesis of the study?
- Those who refused to participants in a study about treatment adherence would show less treatment adherence.
What research method was used?
- Field experiment
Measures used- Semi structured interview, questionnaires, demographic sheets
What was the age range of the sample?
11-18 y/o (who lived with at least 1 family member)-
What chronic condition did the adolescents suffer from?
- Attended the clinic for Type 1 diabetes
The sample consisted of 94 families, categorised into 3 groups. Can you name these groups?
- Participants- (those who completed the whole study)
- Non-returners- (agreed to take part in the study, but failed to return their questionnaire)
- Non-consenters - (completed the initial adherence interview, demographic info sheet, but refused to continue with further questionnaire)
How much families were in the 3 groups?
- Participants- 52
- Non-returners- 28
- Non-consenters- 14
Describe the procedure for Riekert and Drotar’s study?
- (Initial adherence) Interview.
- Demographic sheet
- Questionnaires
- Medical chart review
When was the study conducted?
- 1999
Describe the sample
- 11-18 y/o
- Type 1 diabetes
- Lived with at least 1 family member
- 94 families into total
- Split in 3 groups: Partcipants- 52, non-returners- 28 non-consenters- 14
Stage 1: Initial adhernce interview
The adolescents completed the intial adherence interview- which was a semi-structured clinical interview, which asked questions about how they managed their diabetes– which provided an overall adherence score.
Stage 2: Demographic sheet
Parents filled out a demographic information sheet- asked questions about the child’s: Age, gender, ethnicity, number of hospitalisations, severity of diabetes.
Also asked parents questions about their education levels, how much children they had, and marital status.
Stage 3: Questionnaires (2)
- Parents and adolencents had to complete a questionnaire about child-parent relationships.
- The questionnaires had to be sent back in pre-paid envelopes.
- Parents- 30 mins
- Adolecent- 1 hour
Stage 4: Medical chart review
- Researchers reviewed their medical charts, which gathered objective data on their adherence levels such as number of daily blood sugar testing,, recent level of metabolic control.
