Q

Why was non-adherence rates in asthmatic children so high? (Main context)

A

Reseacher suggests inhalers can manage asthma well, however, children often misuse them causing parental stress, resulting in non-adherence.

Misuse- do not use them in the right way/ avoid using them,

Q

What is a FunHaler?

A

A spacer device designed to improve medication-adherence in children. It has a whistle and spinning toy– so when the child uses deep breathing correctly the toy spins and the whistle sounds- postively reinforcing the correct use of the inhaler.

Q

Summarise the results of the study?

A
  • Children using the standard treatment only completed the recommended breathing cycles 50% of the time compared to 80% of the time when using the Funhaler.
  • Parents reported a 10% success rate of with the standard treatment vs a 73% success rate when using the Funhaler (less fussing/ resistance)

Q

What was the conclusion of the study?

A
  • The study demonstrates that the FunHaler can effectively improve adherence to asthma medication in young children, due to its rewarding and engaging design (shows how postive reinforcement can improve health behaviours in children).
