Laba et al (2012)- results, conclusions, strengths, weakness Flashcards
(8 cards)
What was the conclusion of the study?
- The study found that cost, convience and percieved risks of medication were key factors influencing adherence.
Name one strength and one weakness of the study?
- Strengths= Reliability
- Weakness= Social desirability bias
Name one strength of the study?
- Repeated choice sets were used to check for consistency and rationality behind decision making.
- Enhancing replicability/reliability
Name one weakness of the study?
- Self reports are prone to subjectivity as it relies on biased perceptions and opinions
- Ppts may feel the need to provide socially acceptable responses to avoid feeling judged,or afraid to admit their beliefs around non-adhernce.
What factors (from the 8 factors) did NOT have an affect on patient adherence?
Symptom severity, alcohol restrictions, patient background information/ characteristics
What was the MOST signficant factor on ppt adhernece?
The montly cost of the medication for those who did not have private medical insurance (had to pay out of pocket) wa sthe most sig factor on ppt adherence- but this was not the case for those who were insured.
Futher analysis showed that patients were willing to trade off or comprimise between different factors. Which factors were they willing to comprimise between and continue to take the medication?
- More likely to take once a day medication compared to 4 times a day.
- But ppt were willing to take medication 4 times a day if it reduce the chance of future unwanted side effects by 20%
- Patients believed risk of current side-effects were more imporant than future side effects.
How much ppts believed that the costs to medication was more important that the beneifits, when making decisions to adhere to treatment? Cost/ benefit analysis
58%
