Pandora's Jar
- life untroubled before Pandora
- opens jar and releases misery, disease, other evils into the world
- only Hope left in the jar... have to keep it "contained" and "safe"

What are the five ages of man?
Golden, Silver, Bronze, Hero's, Iron

The Golden Age
- time when Cronos was the sky (near beg. of time)
- natural abundance
- no old age
-death like sleep --> inhabit the earth as protective spirits

The Silver Age
- inferior to men of the Golden Age
- children for a hundred years: short adult life
- violent: fail to honor the gods
- Zeus - in anger - buries them

The Bronze Age
- made out of ash trees (same material as spears)
- "all they cared about was fighting and war"
- Homes, tools, weapons - all made of bronze
- destroyed themselves and went down to underworld

The Hero's Age
- a godlike race of men (demi-gods)
- nobler, more just
- died in great wars (Troy, for example)
- after death --> Islands of the blessed at ends of the earth

The Iron Age
- Hesiod's time
- endless labor
- bonds of family/hospitality weakened
- envy, greed, injustice everywhere
- shame and nemesis (righteous vengeance) depart the earth
