Lecture 1 Flashcards
(16 cards)
What form is the cerebral cortex?
A single sheet folded up to fit in the skull
What contributions did Rene Descartes make to neuroscience?
Descartes argued that the soul was not in the brain and made it legal to study the brain
What contributions did Luigi Galvani make to neuroscience?
Galvani discovered that the nervous system is run using electricity
What contributions did Franz Gall make to neuroscience?
hypothesized that the brain grows bigger like a muscle, so certain areas will push against the skull and create lumps (and divots if you are weak in a certain area). Therefore, one can determine a persons personality traits, strengths, and weaknesses by feeling their head
What is the story of Phineas Gage?
Railroad worker who got a metal rod smashed through his head, completely changed his personality because it went through the frontal lobe
Who named the left frontal lobe?
Paul Broca
Who is Wilder Penfield
Physician who had patients with epilepsy and would use electrical stimulation of the brain while the patient was awake to see how they were feeling
Who is Korbinnian Broddman?
Partitioned out sections of the brain, some similar to humans and animals
What are the parts of the cerebral cortex?
Frontal, paretial, temporam, brainstem, cerebellum
What is a thrombus?
A blood clot that forms in the vessel
What is an embolism?
A thrombus (blood clot) that dislodges from the site that it was formed
What is an aneurysm?
When the tissue holding an artery together starts bulging and swelling and eventually breaks and causes bleeding
What is cortical blindness?
Blind, but part of the brain allows you to perceive things
What is right parietal lobe syndrome?
Having no concept of your left side
What is Kluver-Bucy syndrome?
over sexual behavior and elimination of fear
What are discrete cortical lesions
object agnosia: only see faces
Facial agnosia: only see objects
