Lecture 5 Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is TTX?
Puffer fish toxin, causes muscles used for breathing to be paralyzed
How does TTX work?
It blocks the action potentials when they run into the TTX by either holding or opening the voltage gated Na+ or K+ channels
What are the symptoms of MS?
weakness and heaviness of limbs, intention tremor, mental symptoms
What causes MS?
lesions in the white matter called sclerotic plaques caused by a destruction of the myelin sheaths. Can be caused by a “slow virus”, autoimmune disease, or heredity, or a combination
What is polio?
Disease with flu like symptoms that can lead to paralysis
What causes polio?
A virus
What is leprosy?
Numbness and pain in the extremities accompanied by skin lesions
What cells does leprosy affect>
The schwann cells and dorsal root ganglion cells, caused by a bacteria
What is rabies?
A disease caused by a rabid animal that causes disturbed sleep, throat spasms, horror of water, overall paralysis and death
How does the rabies virus work?
Attached itself to acetylcholine receptor and hops over synaptic cleft into the motor neuron and travels retrogradly into the neurons cel body
What is the prognosis of rabies>
Once symptoms show up, prognosis is bleak, but there is a vaccination that prevents the disease
What is botulism?
Disease that causes gastrointestinal problems and then eventually fatigue of limbs, caused by a bacteria that releases a toxin in canned food
What is tetanus?
A disease that causes pain and swelling of the wound site, spasms of the jaw and muscles
