What is coma?
lack of arousal and completely unresponsive to environment
What is a permanent vegetative state?
no signs of awareness of self/others, however opens eyes/responds
What is a minimally conscious state?
fluctuating awareness of self or others
cognitive disability
brain damage reducing IQ, person can still be normal
What are 2 regions important for cerebral cortex to be activated?
the reticular activating system and the medial thalamus, together combining to form paramedian mesodiencephalic structure
What is the theory of mind
Empathize and predict behaviors of others, occurs in girls first and then boys get it in late adolescence, explains hagen.
What are the causes for mental illness?
stroke/trauma or malfunction of slow synapse neurotransmitter
What is schizophrenia?
disorder that affects 1% of population
Why is schizophrenia on the rise?
more diagnosed now and reported better, possibly something in the environment, more people are living, unnatural lifestyle/diet
What are the positive symptoms of schizophrenia?
hallucinations, delusions (grandeur or paranoia), disorganized speech, bizarre behavior
What are the negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
alogia (muteness), affective flattening (emotionless), avolition (inability to initiate goal oriented behavior), attentional impairment
what are the reasons for the symptoms?
too much dopamine, too many dopamine receptors, and too large effect by the dopamine on the post synaptic cell. Also the NMDA receptor could malfunction and their could be developmental problems ( dendritic and axonal sprouting incomplete)
What is tardive dyskinesia?
due to medical treatment of schizophrenia, causes bizarre movement of the face or mouth
Why wouldn’t patients develop parkinsons?
compensation of the dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra and the dopamine receiving neurons in the basal ganglion
