What is ADHD?
Attention deficit hyperactive disorder, affects 3-5% of American children, 3 times as many boys get it as girls
What are the symptoms of ADHD?
inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity
How do you diagnose ADHD?
make sure symptoms start between 3-4 years old, symptoms consistent in all environments
What are some disorders that can accompany ADHD?
oppositional defiant disorder (aggression and violence) and emotional disorders (anxiety, depression)
What are treatments for ADHD?
Ritalin, Adderall, counseling, and behavior modification
Why give a hyper child a stimulant
Their frontal lobe isn’t active enough (controls impulses), thus by increasing the activity of the brain, it increases the activity of the frontal lobe, better controlling impulses
What is OCD?
Obsessed with an idea or notion and cant get it out of their head, patients know they are being irrational
What are treatments for OCD?
tricyclic antidepressants and therapy
What is bipolar disorder?
episodes of mania and depression
How do anti depressants work?
mimicking norepinephrine, blocking the enzyme that breaks down norepinephrine, Li+ works effectively for bipolar disorder and it is unclear why
What are negative affects of SSRI’s
Increase in suicidal thoughts, causes patients to be “undepressed” enough to actually carry out plans of suicide
What is anxiety neurosis?
Panic attacks and general anxiety
What are treatments?
BDZ, valium, which mimics GABA and increases inhibition of neurons in the cortex
What is PTSD?
affects 9-10% of Americans, causes flashbacks to the traumatic event or amnesia of the event
What is dissociative identity disorder?
multiple personalities (usually one victimized and one normal)
What is the causes of dissociative identity disorder?
extreme childhood abuse that occurs before age 9 and is repetative
Treatment for DID
therapy, no drugs can help
