Lecture 10 Flashcards

1
Q
Pentose phosphate pathway
A
G6P stolen from glycolysis via G6P dehydrogenase which forms NADPH. But, leaves us with 5C sugar phosphate that needs to be turned into a 3C or 6C sugar. Accomplished by rearranging and exchanging C atoms between several 5C molecules. C6 and C3 go back to glycolysis. PPP regulated by NADPH demand.

Q
Other roles of PPP
A
Ribose-5-phosphate is used to make nucleotides. Important in DNA, RNA and cofactor synthesis. NADPH is a vital anti-oxidant in RBCs, deficiency in G6PDH can cause anaemia. RBCs prone to oxidative damage.
