Lecture 10 Flashcards
(10 cards)
Plant production
include both agricultural crops and forestry.
Three sources of growth:
- ) Anable land use expansion
- ) Increases in cropping intensities (i.e., increasing multiple cropping and shorter fallow periods).
- ) Yield growth.
1.) Arable Land use Expansion
-Expansion of agricultural land is a major driver of deforestation in much of developed world.
2.) Increases in cropping intensities
There is believed to be limited potential for further major expansions in this area.
3.) Plant production systems and yield Increases
Most of the increases in crop production will have to come from yield increases.
Plant production systems:
Production systems used must be sustainable if you want long-term increasing in crop production.
1.) seed/seediling preparation
Pre-industrial PPS relied on naturally produced seeds and animals.
2.) Site preparation
Extensive site preparation used in both agricultural and forestry PPS. Clearance of other species from land and preparation of seed bed through mechanical processes.
3.) Planting
Site preparation and planting typically involve considerable disturbance of the soil.
4.) growth:
A.) Nutrient/Mineral Inputs
The great majority of increases in crop production will have to come from higher yields, with a limited contribution from expansion In harvested area.
-N is a major source of environmental concern.
