Lecture 4 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is a pollutant?
Any chemical or material out of place or present at higher than normal concentrations and that has adverse affects on any organism.
Particulates
Particulates (big ones) 2.5 um in diameter and small ones (less than <2.5 um) are both a concern.
Big particulates come from
smoke, dirt, soil, sold, spores, etc.
Small particulates
usually toxic organic compounds and heavy metals.
Remediation:
- ) Restoration
- ) Rehabilitation
- ) Reclamation
Restoration
re-establishment of the original, pre-disturbance ecosystem.
Rehabilitation
The establishment of an ecosystem that is comparable too, but not the as, the pre-disturbance ecosystem.
Reclamation
Aims to return disturbed land to productive use.
Traditional Biomass
us of agricultural by-products also removes nutrient from fields, reducing their fertility.
Modern Biomass
Energy productions leads to displacement of food crops and the clearing and cultivation of land not previously used for export of plant products.
Three categories of environmental concerns:
- ) Catastrophic accidents
- ) Nuclear weapons
- ) Long-term storage of nuclear waste
