1
Q

Define self management

A

A person engages in a behaviour at one point in time to control the occurance of another behaviour (target behaviour) at a later time

The controlling behaviour involves implementing strategies whereby the antecedents and consequences of the TB or alternative behaviours are modified
These strategies make the controlled behaviour more likely to occur

Q

Problem with self management

A

Delayed reinforcement
Many self management problems reflect the conflict between short term, immediate contingencies and the long term, negative outcomes.

3
Q

Temporal discounting

A

The longer the delay between the behaviour and reinforcer, the less likely the reinforcer will be reinforcing

4
Q

Example of temporal discounting

A

Many ppl will choose a smaller but immediate reinforcer rather than a larger but delayed reinforcer

5
Q

How to get ppl to choose the delayed reinforcer

A
  1. Slower increase the delay between the behaviour and the reinforcer
  2. Add in a distracting activity between the behaviour and the reinforcer

Q

Goal setting and self monitoring

A

Set criterion level and time frame
Goals can evolve
Goals must be achievable
Should be done alongside self monitoring

Q

Antecedent manipulation

A

Modifying the environment before the behaviour occurs to influence the future occurance of the TB

9
Q

3 types of antecedent manipulations

A
  1. Present the SD/cue for the desired behaviour and remove the SD/cue for the competing undesirable behaviour
  2. Arrange establishing operation for the desired behaviour/ remove the EO for the competing behaviours
  3. Increase response effort for the undesired b, decrease RE for the desired b

Q

Behavioural contracting

A

Written document in which you identify the target behaviour and arrange consequences that are contingent on a specified level of the target behaviour ina. Specific time frame

Q

Steps for behaviour contracting

A

Identify the TB, establish data collection method, define criterion level and time frame for meeting the behaviour, arrange the contingencies and the individual who will implement them

Q

Problem with having yourself as managing own behavioural contract

A

Short circuit the contingencies
Make the reinforcer not contingent on the behaviour
Must have someone else manage when to give the reward

Q

Social support

A

Can act as a cue to the desired behaviour
Act as a reinforcer for the TB

Q

Self instruction and praise

A

Talking to yourself with instruction can act as a antecedent manipulation
You can also give yourself praise
This doesn’t come naturally to people so need to be rehearsed often through role play

Q

Steps in a self management plan

A

Must choose to do it
Define the target behaviour and competing behaviours
Set goals
Self monitor
FBA
choose strategies
Evaluate change
Reevaluate if necessary
