Lesson 12 - Revision 2 Flashcards
(19 cards)
Which galaxy is the Earth in?
Milky Way
How does the tilt of the axis affect seasons?
Without the tilt, there would be no seasons. The seasons would be the same throughout.
What does SETI stand for?
SETI = Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence
The Earth orbits the Sun in our solar system, alongside how many other planets?
7
Fill the blanks:
Between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, there is an _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.
Asteroid belt
What are asteroids mainly composed of?
Rock and dust
Where do most comets come from?
Oort Cloud
What determines the length of a day on different planets?
How long it takes to turn on its axis once.
Why does a year last longer on Neptune than it does on Earth?
Neptune is further away from the Sun than Earth, so it has to travel a further distance around the Sun
Explain why we have a leap year
The Earth takes 365.25 days to orbit the Sun, and to account for this - we add an extra day every 4 years. (0.25x4=1)
Explain why on Mercury a day lasts longer than a year
Mercury orbits the Sun very quickly due to how close it is but spins on its own axis very slowly. A day on a planet is how long it takes for the planet to spin on its axis.
State by how much the Earth’s axis is tilted
23.5 degrees
What is a full moon?
A full moon is when all of it is lit
How long is a lunar month?
Approximately 28 days
What is a galaxy?
Millions of stars grouped together + planets etc.
What is a new moon?
A new moon is when none of the Moon is lit.
List these celestial bodies in size order, from smallest to largest: Galaxy, Moon, Solar System, Star, Universe, Planet
Moon, Planet, Star, Solar System, Galaxy, Universe
What does the term ‘light year’ mean?
The distance that light travels in one year. Formula = Distance (in meters) = Speed of light (in meters per second) * Time (in seconds) [asterisk means multiplied]
Draw the diagram of a spring tide and a neap tide. Check answer when you’re done.
Search it up on Google and see if it matches (can’t add pictures in this)
