Lipids Flashcards
(7 cards)
Which enzymes breaks down lipids into what molecules?
Lipase breaks lipids down into fatty acids and glycerol
What are lipids?
They’re esters of fatty acids and glycerol
What must happen to lipid molecules before they can be used and why?
they’re too large to pass through the gut wall and must be digested first
What happens to them after they’re digested?
in the body’s cells they’re reassembled into the lipids that the cell needs e.g. cell membranes
Where are lipids produced?
pancreas
.small intestine
What are the products of digestion used for?
to build new carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, with some glucose being used in respiration
What conditions increase the rate of fat breakdown?
body temp
alkaline (higher) pH
emulsification
