The Heart Flashcards
(10 cards)
What separates the right and left side of the heart?
The septum
What are the chambers of the heart called?
Atrium (atria) at the top
Ventricle (at the bottom)
Why does the heart have muscular walls?
To provide a strong heart beat - the hearts walls are mostly made of muscular tissue
What is the difference between the walls of the ventricles and the walls of the atria and why?
The walls of the ventricles are thicker than the walls of the atria cos they have to pump/push the blood further
Why are the walls of the left ventricle thicker than the right?
Has to pump blood all around the body not just to the lungs
Why are thicker walls needed?
They can withstand a higher blood pressure so the blood can travel further
What kind of muscles is the heart made up of?
Cardiac muscles
What arteries supply the heart?
coronary arteries - energy needed from respiration for contraction of muscles and therefore pumping of heart
What is the natural resting heart beat in a healthy person?
70 beats per minute
