Principles of organisation Flashcards
(9 cards)
What are cells?
Cells are the basic building blocks of all living organisms.
What are tissues?
A tissue is a group of cells with a similar structure and function.
What are examples of tissues in mammals?
Muscular tissue - contracts to move whatever its attached to
Glandular tissue - makes & secretes enzymes like chemicals & hormones
Epithelial tissue - covers some parts of the body e.g. inside of gut
How long is an epithelial cell?
Less than 0.1mm
What are organs?
Organs are aggregations of tissues performing specific functions.
What tissues is the stomach made up of?
Muscular tissue - moves the stomach wall to churn food
Glandular tissue - makes digestive juices to digest food
Epithelial tissue - covers the outside and inside of the stomach
What are organ systems?
Organs are organised into organ systems, which work together to form organisms.
What organs make up the human digestive system and what do the different organs do?
Glands - provide digestive juices
Stomach - digests food
Liver - produces bile
Small intestine - digests food & absorbs soluble food molecules
Large intestine-absorbs water from undigested food, leaving faeces
What do organ systems work together to make up?
Organisms
