LM3 Flashcards
What type of joint is the hip joint?
- synovial ball and socket
What ligaments surround the hip joint?
- iliofemoral: y-shaped. prevents overextension during standing
- pubofemoral: arises from obturator crest. prevents overabduction
- ischiofemoral: arises form ischial part
What movements are permitted by the hip joint?
- Flexion/extension
- abduction/adduction
- lateral/medial rotation
- circumduction
What is the blood supply of the head of the femur?
- branches from the obturator artery
- medial/lateral circumflex arteries
What is the blood supply of the hip joint?
- medial/lateral circumflex femoral arteries
What is the nerve supply of the hip joint?
- femoral
- obturator
- sciatic
What are the superficial gluteal muscles?
- gluteus maximus
- gluteus medius
- gluteus minimus
What are the proximal attachments of the superficial gluteal muscles?
- margins of the ala of the ilium
What are main actions of the superficial gluteal muscles?
- extension
- abduction
- medial rotation of the hip
What are the deep gluteal muscles?
- piriformis
- obturator internus
- externs gemelli
- quadratus femoris
What are the distal attachments of the deep gluteal muscles?
- intertrochanteric crest of the femur
What is the main actions of the deep gluteal muscles?
- lateral rotators of the thigh
- stabilise hip joint
What is the nerve supply of gluteus maximus?
- inferior gluteal
What is the nerve supply of gluteus medius/minimus?
- superior gluteal
What compartments are the thigh muscles divided into?
- anterior compartment: extensors of the knee, flexor of the hip
- posterior compartment: flexors of the knee, extensors of the hip
- medial compartment: adductors of the hip
What comprises the hamstring muscles?
- biceps femoris
- semitendinosus
- semimembranosus
What is the proximal attachment of the hamstring muscles?
- ischial tuberosity
What is the distal attachment of biceps femoris?
- head of the fibula
What are the distal attachments of semimembranosus and semitendinosus?
- semimembranosus: medial condyle of tibia
- semitendinosus: medial shaft of the tibia
What are the hamstring muscles innervated by?
- sciatic nerve
- BF: long head - tibial nerve, short head - common peroneal nerve
- ST/SM: tibial nerve
What are the contents of the popliteal fossa?
- artery: popliteal artery
- vein: popliteal vein
- nerves: tibial, common perineal nerves (laterally)
- lymphatics: small group of lymph nodes
What are the nerve roots of sciatic nerve?
- L4-S4
What muscles comprise quadriceps femoris?
- rectus femoris
