London doclands case study?
Located in east London,along the river thames. Set up in 1981 to attract private investment/regenerate area
Regeneration projects:
Economic- Canary Wharf. Provides jobs in finance/IT/media. Unemployment fell significantly.over 85,000 jobs created by 2000’s
Transport improvements- DLR links area to central London. New roads and improved bus routes.London city airport opened for business travellers.(area more accessible for businesses,reduce journey time/eased congestion,created local jobs)
Housing/environment-22k new homes built,renovation of old apartments into luxury homes.creation of greenspace/cleaner environment (attracts new residents repopulating area,increase property values/attract wealthier investors and residents,helps reduce air pollution/space for better mental/physical health)
Issues:
Gentrification- rising house prices pushed out local residents
Social inequality-locals couldn’t afford new housing or access skilled jobs
